Buying exhaust parts or a custom exhaust system

What matters when buying exhaust parts or a custom exhaust system.

If you have an existing custom exhaust you will most likely have to get parts from whoever made the system for you. However if you have an exhaust that came from a aftermarket manufacturer you can get motorcycle exhaust parts from them directly. Some systems do allow for universal baffles and things of that nature however usually the best bet is to go back to where you bought the exhaust and get any accessories for that particular model from them. This will insure that any of your exhaust accessories or parts fit properly. This is why it is best to buy any custom exhaust from a reputable manufacturer that will have parts available should you need them.

One of the nice things about a custom exhaust pipe set up is the sound is usually much better then what the stock pipe can offer you. This is mainly because these days motorcycle makers are required to dumb down the power of their motors, this is especially true for sport bikes. Because of this restrictions are placed in the air intake and exhaust flow. Not only that but noise restrictions also inhibit a nice and loud exhaust sound from a stock pipe.

When you are looking at buying an aftermarket motorcycle exhaust pipe there are several factors to look at. I would first of all look at the quality of the welds to be sure the pipe will last. If you see cracks or real shoddy looking welds don't mess with that and look elsewhere. I think the other biggest factor is probably the finish. If you are getting a set of chrome exhaust pipes for your bike make sure that the chrome looks good and is of a showroom quality. Same thing if you get carbon fiber or anything exotic like that  make sure that there are no breaks or rubs in the material. Carbon fiber is probably one of the nicest can material when done properly, combine it with some titanium and you have a quality racing exhaust in the works. Akropovic makes some really nice custom motorcycle exhaust of that nature. Now for a custom exhaust for a cruiser I would recommend Vance and Hines, Jardine, Sampson or Supertrapp. Supertrapp makes some real nice tunable 2 in to 1 systems that will make your bike rock and the sound is nice too. Cobra also makes some nice pieces that are beautifully chromed and have a rocking sound to them as well. There are many custom aftermarket makers of exhaust systems out there the ones I named are just the ones I am mostly familiar with.
