Choosing an Aftermarket Exhaust Muffler

Why choose an aftermarket Motorcycle Exhaust pipe or muffler for your motor cycle.

OEM exhaust mufflers are ok but are generally made to be very restrictive to the performance of your engine. This is true for both motorcycle mufflers for sport  bikes and cruisers. Since restricting the flow of exhaust as well as restricting the intake of air will slow a motorcycle down. Once you remove the stock air box and add one of many aftermarket motorcycle exhausts you will find that there is a lot of power to be gained by just making those two simple modifications.

If you do decide to go with a sport aftermarket motorcycle exhaust you will need to invest in a power commander which is an electronic module that allows for re tuning of the ECU that controls your fuel intake and is in control of the general running of your engine. The reason you will need to use one of these systems is that a when you replace a stock muffler with an aftermarket motorcycle exhaust muffler you will make the bike lean which can cause it to run to hot and cause engine damage. In the old days you would re jet your carburetors but now all your modern bikes have fuel injection systems which are electronically controlled and therefore a system like a power commander is needed to adjust your fuel injection to accommodate for your new motorcycle muffler.

Motorcycle exhaust mufflers come in many different varieties and brands. You have to choose which is right for your ride. You might just go with some mufflers that are slip ons which only replace the muffler part also called the cans on the bike or you might decide that a full set of race exhaust pipes is the way to go which will replace your entire exhaust system form the motor back. Most people opt for the slip ons mainly because you get increased performance at a reasonable price where a full aftermarket motorcycle exhaust system will cost you twice as much then the slip on exhaust mufflers. Both slip-ons and full systems are available by many fine exhaust manufacturers like: Akrapovic, Jardine, Cobra, Samson, Scorpion, Yoshimura and Vance and Hines. These are probably your most predominant manufacturers of exhaust parts for bikes in the industry today. Just remember when you decide to drop the OEM system and start shopping for aftermarket parts, take your time and look at all that is available for your make and model before making a purchase. It can be really frustrating to buy the first cool system you see to only find out you could have gotten something even more suited to your needs.
